Divorce and separation are painful for everyone involved – particularly children. At such challenging times children need support, love and contact with both parents. Building some certainty about the future is also very important for all involved.
Family & Child mediation (also known as family dispute resolution) aims to help separating couples reach agreements that are in the best interest of their children. This is in line with the Best Interests of the Child Standard of the Children’s Act. Through the mediation process, couples who are in conflict can be supported to communicate with each other about what is important for them and how to make decisions relevant to resolving their dispute. It also encourages separating couples to parent cooperatively.
A written Parenting Plan, worked out between parents, will help clarify the arrangements you need to put in place to care for your children. The Parenting Plan can include residency, shared parental responsibility, contact time with your children and financial obligations. It will help everyone involved know what is expected of them and it will be a valuable reference as time passes and circumstances change.
